Seven weeks of intense Cricket came down to its final halt on Sunday at Lords. England lifts the Cricket World Cup for the first time after a dramatic super over that made headlines as history’s most nail biting finish. Luckily the fateful day of final between England and New Zealand got some break from frequent showers of this season.
A jam-packed crowd witnessed New Zealand batting first and scoring 241. Henry Nicholls was the highest scorer at 55 from 77 deliveries. Woakes and Plunkett took 3 wickets each. It seemed not an uphill task for England but never happened as expected. Englishmen lost their top order early. They were 4 down at 86. Then Stokes and Butler consolidated. Butler lost his wicket at 59 but Stokes not out 84, stayed at the wicket till the end to register a tie.
Now the game has to be decided on a Super Over. England scored 15 runs and Kiwis were up to a good chase. They needed 2 of the last delivery; Guptill played a shot and got run out on the second run by a timely Jason Roy throw, again scores were level but England won because of hitting the most boundaries. It was a dramatic finish to the World Cup and a match that will be remembered for years to come.
Kane Williamson was declared, “Player of the Tournament” and Ben Stokes was awarded “Man of the Match”. Thus a very interesting World Cup 2019 came to an end. A team that was one of the favorites rightly won it. English fans are ecstatic today. Undoubtedly this English team has been a major contender for the Cup. New Zealand reached the final twice consecutively and they were breathtakingly close to clinch it. Last time England were in finals back in 1992 against Pakistan ended on a losing side but today they are the glorious champions of world Cricket.
