Ronaldo and Messi have not let anyone else win this award for a decade now. The two titans of world football are in continuous battle for supremacy. This time Ronaldo makes it ahead of his rival in the hypercompetitive year of football. Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or for a fifth time, equaling the all-time record of Lionel Messi.
The star striker of Real Madrid was presented with the award in Paris on Thursday whereas Messi finished second and PSG’s Neymar stood at third position. The 32 year old Portuguese maestro also helped his country book a FIFA World Cup spot in Russia besides exceptional performance in prestigious tournaments like LaLiga and UEFA Champions League.
“I feel very happy, it’s a fantastic moment in my career,” said Ronaldo. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. This year has been great. Trophies help win these awards and we have to thank my colleagues from Madrid and Portugal, it was very important for me. I hope to play at this level for a few more years. I hope the battle with Messi continues; things happen for a reason.”
Ronaldo’s 48 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions has been a match winning show of skill and passion.
